RON BLOORE
Discovered Drawings Jan - Feb 1980

The Moore Gallery, Toronto, Nov. 6 - 27, 1999

jpeg
While moving house in 1998, a large number of works on paper were moved from Ron Bloore's small home studio to his painting studio downtown. Among these drawings, mostly sketches and explorations, was an exquisite group of fully realized works from 1980 on Arches paper done with gouache, oil and ink all together. These beautifully delicate works had never been shown to anyone outside that small sunny room, and had been forgotten by Bloore himself.

The thirteen works shown here were exhibited by the Moore Gallery in November 1999 as the “Discovered Drawings.” The work at the top was reproduced on the invitation to the show. Five other works from this series were shown in the Winchester Gallery's Paintings on Paper 1979-80 show in Victoria in 2008.

Clicking the images in this gallery, as with most, will open a new window with a larger view, but these old captures do not offer much in the way of detail and immediacy. They were shot using 35mm film for documentation, not for publication.

1980, February 2 (one of three), Oil, gouache, ink on paper, 18 x 24", 46 x 61cm

This work was donated to the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario for their 2001 Art Auction. The catalogue had this to say about it:

This ink/oil piece features five stems and flowers or perhaps, seeds from a watermelon, progress[ing] along a straight line, marching to the beat of their own drummer.

Faced with Bloore's unwillingness to spoon feed them bon mots about his work, no other commenter has produced an interpretation as charming as this.
